ASUP STRIKE UPDATES: ASUP/COEASU Strike Continues as Nigerian Commission Unable to Reach Agreement

“As the ministry made proposal to settle the lecturers’ arrears owed since 2009 in installments, the commission wrote to kick against the plan.”

The ongoing nationwide strike by lecturers of polytechnics and colleges of education continues after the lecturers were told on Tuesday that a government agency was opposed to the payment of their salary arrears.

The Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, told lawmakers and the striking lecturers that the Salaries, Wages and Income Commission was opposed to the payment of arrears owed them.

Mr. Wike said this at a meeting organised by the House of Representatives Committee on Education in Abuja. The meeting, as reported by PREMIUM TIMES, was also attended by leaders of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, and the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, COEASU.

“As the ministry made proposal to settle the lecturers’ arrears owed since 2009 in installments, the commission wrote to kick against the plan,” Mr. Wike said. “Government has been meeting on what to do, but the commission opposes the proposal I made to pay the arrears in installment.”

The minister said the commission was opposed to the proposal claiming that it was not consulted before the 2009 CONTISSS agreement between the lecturers and the federal government was reached.

He said the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Pius Anyim, has invited those involved to a meeting with a view to resolving the matter.

He listed those invited to include the ministers of Education and Labour, the Head of Service and the Wages Commission.

The minister assured that the Federal Government would soon resolve the ongoing strike, saying it was deploying all means to reach an agreement with the unions.

“We owe this country a great duty. Nobody will be sitting down happily to see our children staying at home,” he said.

On the issue of the white paper on visitation panels to polytechnics, Mr. Wike assured that it would soon be released.

The Chairman of the House Committee, Aminu Suleiman (APC-Kano) appealed to the two unions and the government for amicable solution to the issues.

The ASUP President, Chibuzo Asumagha, expressed satisfaction with the minister’s assurance, saying that his union never rejected the installment payment.

The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Abdulwahid Omar, cautioned the wages commission on its interference.

“The wages and salaries commission should not come in at this time to stall the arrangement between government and the two unions, “he said.

Speaking after the meeting, the ASUP spokesperson, Clement Chairman, told PREMIUM TIMES that the union was surprised by the stance of the wages commission and the federal government.

“The last time we had a meeting we were talking about modalities of payment, now they are saying that government has set up a technical committee to look at the matter because there is an observation from salary and wages commission, which is actually a little set back,” he said.

Mr. Chirman said the committee set up by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Pius Anyim, to review the controversy was given one week to complete its assignment.

“It was also advised that the committee should meet in a space of one week; after that another meeting will be held,” he said.

ASUP has been on strike since October 2013 while COEASU has been on strike since December 2013.

JAMB CBT Exam at Digital Bridge Institute on 26th May Shifted to 31st May

It was gathered that the JAMB CBT candidates that were supposed to write their exams on the 26th of May at the Digital Bridge Institute DBI in Lagos could not do so due to power outage in the centre.

Consequently their exams were shifted to 31st May 2014 by 11.am.

According to a JAMB official some of the candidates were coming from far distance and it won’t be conducive writing the exam at night, hence the need to shift the exam since the power problem could not be fixed immediately.

Some of the affected candidates called on JAMB to make sure there is no such occurrence again, saying it is quite demoralizing to have prepared so hard to write an examination only to be told otherwise at the last moment.

JAMB UTME Change Your Course/Institution - How to

JAMB Change of Course/Institution for 2014 is still on-going and available for both PPT and CBT candidates.
We advise candidates (CBT and PPT) to take advantage of this now since JAMB may give a very short notice on the deadline.

There are obviously three good reasons why a candidate may need to change his/her jamb choice of course or institution or both:

Case 1A. Due to Low UTME score:

After the release of Jamb results, the next thing to face is post-UTME and admissions. Now take for instance that someone applied for a federal university who will probably fix a cut-off mark of 200 and above; if such candidate scored less than 200, it simply means he/she has lost the admission. In this case the change of institution to a state-owned/private University becomes necessary. State universities generally fix cut-off marks below 200.

Case 1B. Due to Low UTME score:

Just like case 1A above, this happens when a candidate chose a very competitive course like Law, Medicine and Surgery, Pharmacy, Engineering, etc. Several courses have greater number of applicants than others and such courses invariably attract very high cut-off marks. To avoid being left aside a candidate is advised to go for change of course within the same institution/faculty.

Case 2. Incomplete O'level results

In this case candidates who may have ran into deficiency of required credit passes in some key/relevant subjects may decide to go for change of course to accommodate themselves.

Case 3. Mistakes during registration

Was there a mistake while filling your registration by either you or the business/cyber cafe? With this help, you can now correct any errors made during registration of your course or institution.

Case 4. Other causes

These includes several factors ranging from finance, change in Geographical locations, Parent's suggestions, Fear of Tribal differences, etc. Such cases treated under this heading result to change of institution.

We wish you all best of luck.
