UNIBEN Wins International Award for Vehicle Innovation

Students of Faculty of Engineering, University of Benin, called Team UNIBEN, broke grounds in an international competition - Shell Eco Marathon in Europe and South Africa in Oct. 2014 and won a distinguishing award for 'most innovative vehicle design' throughout Africa with its made in Nigeria car called Ecocruise. Shell Eco Marathon is a global competition that challanges students to build, test and drive fuel efficient vehicles. In other words, all the cars built are set to race and the vehicle that goes the farthest on the least amount of fuel automatically wins. 

Team UNIBEN has previously also broken a record when they attended the Shell eco-marathon Europe in may 2014 with its first made in Nigeria car Tuketuke, making it the first team from Sub Saharan Africa to participate in the Shell eco-marathon. These two cars were handmade by these students alone in the workshop. 
Tuketuke has innovative features like automatic windscreen wiper, button actuated gears, fingerprint access, ankara interior and fibreglass body. Both cars won all 10 technical and safety inspections, which I might add, are world standard, that qualified them to race on the track. 
They are currently taking yet another challenge to build two cars that will participate in another shell eco-marathon in the Netherlands next year. 
Students involved include: Osas Omijie, Festus ibidapo, adekola adeyemi, abdulmalik tajliad, Daniel okwoka, justice Oyemike, emmanuel Ajari, eloghosa iyamu, James itoro, Jennifer orji, Anne monye, Michael olukoya,and Victor adegboye, 13 students in total supervised by Professor Akii Ibhadode (Winner, NLNG Award for Science, 2010).

Apply for the 2015 Valeo Innovation Challenge for Students Worldwide

Valeo invites students worldwide to participate in its 2015 automobile Innovation Challenge.Students are challenged to come up with automotive solutions that will make cars smarter and more intuitive by 2030. The students will be asked to develop bold,revolutionary solutions for the communities of tomorrow.

The purpose of the contest is to recognize an innovative automotive equipment project chosen from submissions by students from around the world.

To coincide with the 2014 Paris Motor Show, Valeo is kicking off its second “Valeo Innovation Challenge 2015″ contest. The competition invites students from engineering,technology and science schools and universities worldwide to take an active role in automobile innovation. Their task is to come up with automotive solutions that will make cars smarter and more intuitive by 2030. The students will be asked to develop bold, revolutionary solutions for the communities of tomorrow.

The contest serves to demonstrate that innovation is part of Valeo’s DNA and that Research & Development are a priority for the company. This strategy guides the work of Valeo’s 9,000 engineers, who innovate daily to invent the car of tomorrow.

Valeo plans to hire more than 1,000 engineers and technicians a year over the next three years and wants to make students aware of the challenges offered by professions in the automotive industry.

Entries would be judged based on the following criteria
* Boldness, innovation and originality (50%)
* Importance and relevance of the problem addressed and consideration of social needs (20%)
* Presentation quality of the submission (10%)
* Technical proficiency (10%)
* Feasibility of the prototype (10%)

There are 3 phases in this challenge
Phase 1: Call for entries and registration (deadline:February 2,2015). Project outline limited to six pages, illustrations (photos,diagrams) permitted, including a mandatory, concise one-page
summary of the entire project.
Phase 2: Prototyping (deadline: July 17, 2015). The 20 qualifying teams will have 16 weeks to finalize their project (description and prototype).Production of a prototype and/or other media (video,slideshow, flash animation, 2D or 3D images, etc.), as well as a written document not to exceed 20 pages.
Phase 3: Awards. The winning team and second- and third-place teams will be announced and presented with an award at the Frankfurt Motor Show (2015 IAA) in September 2015.

Awards
* Grand Prize Winner: €100,000 (shared equally amongst team members)
* Second and third place winners: €10,000 (shared equally amongst team members)
* cost of travel to Frankfurt, Germany for all members of the six finalist teams, including round-trip airfare and accommodation
(this does not include meals, beverages, personal expenses, trips and entertainment not provided by the organizer; these will be at the sole expense of the finalists)
* The 20 teams selected to build a model for phase 2 will each have €5,000 to develop their idea and build a functional prototype,which could be physical equipment or software

Eligibility
* Open to students from engineering, technology and science schools and universities
* Submissions are limited to one per person (same name and same e-mail address). Teams may be multidisciplinary and draw on the skills of students in other fields such as design, sociology, philosophy, urban planning, architecture, biology, etc.
* Participants must have permission to travel outside their country of residence and, by September 2015, have a passport that is valid for at least six months past the date of the awards ceremony (September 2015)
* Each team leader should assemble all of the documents and banking information – IBAN, Swift number, bank name and country of residence – that will be requested prior to disbursement of the funding for the prototyping phase

 The following people are ineligible:
(1) Employees of the organizer, its subsidiaries, its parent company or companies managed by the same parent company and their children
(2)Individuals who helped
organize the contest and their children
(3)Individuals with a conflict of interest.

How to Enter
* Create a team of 2 to 5 students from any discipline and register here
* Each team shall designate a team leader to represent it who would handle communication with Valeo
* Come up with a technology to improve the car of the future,
* write a 1- to 6-page project description (you may include photos and diagrams) in English and submit it by 12 noon CET on February 2, 2015

Federal Government (FG) Planning to Bring The Ideas of NYSC Scheme Into UN Programme

The Federal Government has this week announced plans to mainstream the National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) in to the United Nations programme. The move according to sources is to give the scheme a global outlook where other nations can tap from its initiative.
 
The Minister of Youth Development, Mr. Boni Haruna who disclosed this Friday in Abuja at a bilateral meeting between the ministry and officials of UN-Habitat, stated that the move will help in creating an opportunity for Nigeria to be very active in the United Nations’ system.

According to the Minister, “The whole idea is to expose it to the outside world to appreciate what we are doing and also learn from it, thereby creating a platform for our youths to bring out their skills to create opportunity for national integration and other thing that would bring about mutual development of this country.

“It is always good to expose your gains to the outside world to leverage on. Many don’t know what is happening in the scheme, many countries don’t know about the scheme and there are other countries that are doing something similar or even smaller and they make so much noise about it. We have a very big scheme which is about forty years, much has been achieved and people would like to know what we are doing under NYSC,” he said.

2015 Lee Kuan Yew Global Business Plan Competition for Students invites business strategic deep thinkers and  global visionary undergraduate, college and polytechnic students around the world to apply for US$60,000 and business development opportunities.

The eighth biennial Lee Kuan Yew Global Business Plan Competition, an event named after Singapore’s first Prime Minister who’s widely recognised as a strategic thinker and a global visionary. Organised specially for undergraduate, college and polytechnic students around the world, the competition continues to be a platform for entrepreneurs of tomorrow. Participants will be able to showcase their business plans and entrepreneurial talents on a global stage, attract seed funding to further their business ambitions as well as extend their network of friends and business contacts through the Competition.

Eligibility

The Competition is open to all full-time university undergraduates, college and polytechnic students
(participants who are university undergraduates, college or polytechnic students during the period of 1st January 2015– 20 August 2015 are eligible to participate).
Winners of similar competitions are invited to participate if they meet the requirements above.

Competition Requirements
* Participants are required to submit a business plan for a start-up or early stage venture. Proposals for merger/acquisitions of an existing company,consulting projects or licensing arrangements are not eligible.
* An existing business is only eligible if it has received less
than US$80,000 in funding and has less than US$100,000 in gross revenue as at 31st January 2015 .
* All submitted materials must be the original work of the participating team. A declaration to this effect will need to be submitted along with your proposal (Click here to download declaration form).

Each team is eligible to submit one idea. In the event of multiple submissions by a team the last submission made by the team will be considered for evaluation.

Confidentiality

Participants retain all proprietary rights to the business plans. Copies of the business plans will only be circulated for judging purposes, and any hard copies will be returned by the judges to SMU after the judging is completed. All business plans received for the Competition will then be deleted and destroyed. All other requests for the business plans will be directed back to the participants.

Audio and video recordings of the Final Presentations will be made for SMU’s archival and competition’s promotions purposes, and will not be circulated to other parties without prior consent.

A one page summary (to be contributed by the team) of the business plans that reach the Semi-Final will be featured in the souvenir booklet, which will be distributed at the Final, as well as targeted media releases.

The media will be invited to attend the Final Round. Any media requests will be directed back to the teams.

Although the agencies respect the propriety rights of the participants and will endeavour to protect their rights, the organiser will not enter into any non-disclosure statements of agreements with any parties.

Submission Requirements

Submissions for all stages:

To ensure fair and unbiased judging, business plans must NOT contain, anywhere, the names of the students, contact details and the names of their institutions. Should any of these details are to be found in your business plans, your submission will be DISQUALIFIED. We assure all participants that we are able to track efficiently and effectively the progress of all business proposals without errors.
NB:All business plans and presentations are to be in the English language.

NUJ’s International Institute of Journalism (IIJ) to get NBTE Accreditation

The Nigerian Union of Journalists’ owned academic outfit, the International Institute of Journalism (IIJ) will soon get the accreditation of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE). The announcement was made by the Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education, (NBTE), Dr Adamu Kazaure. He stated that the International Institute of Journalism (IIJ)’s application for accreditation has gotten the endorsement of the Governing Board and would soon get the final approval.

Kazaure who acknowledged the significant role played by Journalists said, the board would ensure that the academic outfit which is committed to training and retraining journalists is duly accredited for journalists to be more professionally qualified, efficient in the discharge of their duties.

The secretary made this known in his office when the NUJ National Executive members led by the President, Mallam Muhammad Garba alongside the management staff of the IIJ paid him a courtesy visit. Kazaure noted that the board has about 435 institutions under its supervision with several other institutions seeking accreditation.

Earlier, NUJ President Mallam Muhammad Garba commended the NBTE for the job well-done, saying the board has lifted the technical and vocational standard of education in the country.

He appealed to the government to ensure adequate funding of the board to discharge its responsibilities effectively. NUJ established since 1994 and offering diploma certificates in some courses particularly Journalism and journalism related courses. It has graduated no fewer than 7,000 so far.

The university of British Colombia host the Canadian international leader of tomorrow award,that which recognises international  undergraduates from everywhere across the globe who demonstrate superior academic achievement and other co-curricular activitie.

The International Leader of Tomorrow Award recognizes international undergraduate students who demonstrate superior academic achievement, leadership skills involvement in student affairs and community service,recognized achievement in fields of endeavour such as the performing arts, sports, debating or creative writing, or external academic competitions and examinations.

International Leader of Tomorrow Award-winners receive an award-level commensurate with their financial need as determined by the costs of their tuition, fees and living costs,minus the financial contribution the student and their family can make annually towards these costs. A standard needs assessment is made, based on financial information provided by students and their families.

The International Leader of Tomorrow Award can be renewed for up to three additional years of undergraduate study, or to degree completion, whichever is less, provided the student achieves satisfactory academic standing in their faculty,continues to demonstrate financial need, and maintains their Canadian study permit (visa).

ELIGIBILITY
Award candidates must be nominated by their current school or college/university. To be considered for an International Leader of Tomorrow Award, students must:
* be admissible to the first choice program they are applying to, including meeting UBC’s English language Admission Standard
* have an excellent academic record (at least an “ A ” average or equivalent standard)
* be an international student, who is neither a Canadian citizen nor a permanent resident of Canada, and who will be studying in Canada on a Canadian Study Permit (visa)
* demonstrate a level of financial need that would otherwise prevent them from pursuing a UBC degree.

2015/2016 Emile Boutmy Scholarship Programme

Sciences Po created the Emile Boutmy scholarship after the founder of Sciences Po (1871) in order to welcome the very best international students from outside of the European Union. The Emile Boutmy Scholarship is awarded to top students whose profiles match the admissions priorities of Sciences Po and individual course requirements.

Eligibility Requirements:
Eligible students are those first time applicants, from a non-European Union state, whose household does not file taxes within the European Union, and who have been admitted to the Undergraduate or Master’s programme. This scholarship is awarded based on factors of excellence and according to the type of profile sought for this programme. Social criteria are also taken into account. Undergraduate programme: Amount and length of the scholarship 2015-2016
The Emile Boutmy programme can take several different forms:
1. A tuition grant of €7,300 per year for the three years of the undergraduate programme, in addition to a grant to cover part of the cost of living of €5000 per year.
2. A tuition grant of€7,300 per year for the three years of the undergraduate programme.
