Bill Gates Foundation Scholarships are prestigious, highly competitive full-cost scholarships. They are awarded to outstanding applicants from countries outside the UK to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge.
 
The programme aims to build a global network of future leaders committed to improving the lives of others. The Gates Cambridge Scholarships are one of the most prestigious international scholarships in the world.


The programme was established in 2000 by a donation of US$210m from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to the University of Cambridge; this is the largest ever single donation to a UK university.

Eligibility for the 2015/16 Bill Gates Foundation Scholarships
You can apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship if you are:
1. a citizen of any country outside the United Kingdom.
applying to pursue one of the following full-time residential courses of study at the University of Cambridge: PhD (three year research-only degree); MSc or MLitt (two year research-only degree); or a one year postgraduate course (e.g. MPhil, LLM, MASt, Diploma, MBA etc.)

OR

2. already a student at Cambridge and want to apply for a new postgraduate course. For example, if you are studying for an MPhil you can apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship to do a PhD. However, if you have already started a course, you cannot apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship to fund the rest of it.

OR

3. already a Gates Cambridge Scholar and want to apply for a second Scholarship. You must apply by the second, international deadline and go through the same process of departmental ranking, shortlisting and interviewing as all other candidates.

Fields of study This scholarship will be given to pursue any postgraduate program in Cambridge University, UK. What the scholarship covers Bill and Melinda Gates foundation scholarship is a full scholarship and covers the following:

The University Composition Fee and College fees at the appropriate rate a maintenance allowance for a single student (£13, 300 for 12 months at the 2012-13 rates; pro rata for courses shorter than 12 months) one economy single airfare at both the beginning and end of the course Family allowance – up to £7,775 for a first child and up to £1,200 for a second child. No funding is provided for a partner Fieldwork – you may apply to keep up to your normal maintenance allowance while on fieldwork as part of your PhD.
Some fourth year funding for PhD Scholars may be provided – but the termly maintenance allowance reduces per term for up to a year Hardship funding – if there are unforeseen difficulties.

You should be applying to start a DPhil, or one of the following taught courses: MSc in Biodiversity, Conservation and Management; MSc in Contemporary India; Master of Public Policy; MSc in Water Science, Policy and Management; MSc in Environmental Change and Management; and the MPhil in Development Studies. Applications for Indira Gandhi DPhil scholarships are welcome from candidates whose proposed area of study is relevant to the Indira Gandhi Centre’s (IGC) agenda of inter-disciplinary research on sustainable development and India. The IGC will focus on a series of impact themes. The initial themes will be sustainable food and water and environmental conservation; future themes could include governance, medical research and healthcare and the role of culture and philosophy, including women’s issues. Independent proposals on any India-related theme that fits within the overall aims of the IGC are welcome. You must be ordinarily resident in India and should be intending to return to India once your course is completed. The scholarship is only tenable at Somerville College. All eligible applicants will be considered for this scholarship, regardless of which college (if any) you state as your preference on the graduate application form. However, successful applicants will be transferred to Somerville College in order to take up the scholarship.

Oxford-Lady Gore Booth Graduate Scholarship:
You should be applying to start a Master’s course at Oxford. The complete list of eligible courses is: MSc Global Governance & Diplomacy; MSc Education; MSt International Human Rights Law; and MSc Learning and Teaching. You must be ordinarily resident in Burma. The scholarship is only tenable at St Hugh’s College. All eligible applicants will be considered for this scholarship, regardless of which college (if any) you state as your preference on the graduate application form. However, successful applicants will be transferred to St Hugh’s College in order to take up the scholarship.

Oxford-Lemann Fellowship:
You should be applying to start a new Master’s in Public Policy (MPP) at Oxford. You must be ordinarily resident in Brazil.

Oxford-Louis Littmann-Geza Vermes Graduate Scholarship:
You should be applying to start a new DPhil in Oriental Studies at Oxford, specialising in Jewish-Christian relations in late antiquity. You must be ordinarily resident in the EEA or Switzerland. The scholarship is only tenable at Wolfson College. All eligible applicants will be considered for this scholarship, regardless of which college (if any) you state as your preference on the graduate application form. However, successful applicants will be transferred to Wolfson College in order to take up the scholarship.

Oxford-Murray Graduate Scholarship:
You should be applying to start a new Master’s course at Oxford in the Faculty of Classics. The scholarship is only tenable at Wadham College. All eligible applicants will be considered for this scholarship, regardless of which college (if any) you state as your preference on the graduate application form. However, successful applicants will be transferred to Wadham College in order to take up the scholarship. This scholarship is not open to candidates applying for Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma courses, part-time courses, non-matriculated courses or to students with deferred entry.

Oxford-Pershing Square Graduate Scholarship:
You should be applying to start a new 1+1 MBA programme at Oxford.

Oxford-Polonsky Graduate Scholarship:
You should be applying to start a new DPhil course at Oxford within the Humanities Division. You must be ordinarily resident in a country outside of the EEA and Switzerland. The scholarship is only tenable at Lincoln College. All eligible applicants will be considered for this scholarship, regardless of which college (if any) you state as your preference on the graduate application form. However, successful applicants will be transferred to Lincoln College in order to take up the scholarship.

Oxford-Radcliffe Graduate Scholarship:
You should be applying to start as a new student on one of the following graduate courses at Oxford: Doctoral Training Programme in Enviromental Research, Centre for Doctoral Training in Cyber Security, Centre for Doctoral Training in Industrially Focussed Mathematical Modelling, Centre for Doctoral Training in Next Generation Statistical Science, Centre for Doctoral Training in Synthesis for Biology and Medicine, Centre for Doctoral Training in Theory and Modelling in Chemical Sciences, Any DPhil in the Medical Sciences Division, A DPhil in Politics or in International Relations, An MPhil or DPhil in Economics and Some other courses, details to be confirmed. The scholarship is only tenable at University College. All eligible applicants will be considered for this scholarship, regardless of which college (if any) you state as your preference on the graduate application form. However, successful applicants will be transferred to University College in order to take up the scholarship. This scholarship is not open to candidates applying for Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma courses, part-time courses, non-matriculated coursesor to students with deferred entry.

Oxford-Robin Geffen-Keble Graduate Scholarship:
You should be applying to start the MSt in English Literature 1550-1700 at Oxford. You must be ordinarily resident in the EEA or Switzerland. The scholarship is only tenable at Keble College. All eligible applicants will be considered for this scholarship, regardless of which college (if any) you state as your preference on the graduate application form. However, successful applicants will be transferred to Keble College in order to take up the scholarship.

Oxford-Rothermere American Institute:
You should be applying to start an DPhil in History, specialising in American History, at Oxford. You must be ordinarily resident in the EEA or Switzerland. The scholarship is preferably tenable at The Queen’s College. All eligible applicants will be considered for this scholarship, regardless of which college (if any) you state as your preference on the graduate application form. However, successful applicants will preferably be transferred to The Queen’s College in order to take up the scholarship.

 Oxford-Swire Graduate Scholarship:
You should be applying to start either a DPhil or MSt in the Faculty of History at Oxford. The scholarship is only tenable at University College. All eligible applicants will be considered for this scholarship, regardless of which college (if any) you state as your preference on the graduate application form. However, successful applicants will be transferred to University College in order to take up the scholarship.

Oxford-Wolfson-Marriott Graduate Scholarship:
You should be applying to start a new graduate course at Oxford in one of the following subjects: Either a DPhil in Anthropology (3 years), or an MSc in Anthropology leading to a DPhil in Anthropology (4 years), DPhil in Archaeology (3 years), DPhil in General Linguistics and Comparative Philology (3 years), DPhil in Healthcare Innovation (4 years), Either a DPhil in International Relations (3 years) or a DPhil in Politics (3 years), Either an MSt in Islamic Art and Archaeology leading to a DPhil in Oriental Studies (4 years) or an MPhil in Islamic Art and Archaeology leading to a DPhil in Oriental Studies (4 years), MSt in Korean Studies leading to a DPhil in Oriental Studies (4 years) and Either a DPhil in Social Intervention (3 years) or a DPhil in Social Policy (3 years). You must be ordinarily resident in the EEA or Switzerland. This scholarship is only tenable at Wolfson College. All eligible applicants will be considered for this scholarship, regardless of which college (if any) you state as your preference on the graduate application form. However, if there are two candidates of equal academic merit, then the candidate who listed Wolfson College as their preference on the graduate application form will be awarded the scholarship. Successful applicants will be transferred to Wolfson College in order to take up the scholarship.

Scholarship Open for International Students: 
International students are eligible for Oxford-Aiden Jenkins Graduate Scholarship,Oxford-Murray Graduate Scholarship, Oxford-Pershing Square Graduate Scholarship, Oxford-Radcliffe Graduate Scholarship and Oxford-Swire Graduate Scholarship. Indian students are eligible for Oxford-Indira Ghandi Graduate Scholarship, students of Burma (Myanmar) for Oxford-Lady Gore Booth Graduate Scholarship and Brazilian students are eligible for Oxford-Lemann Fellowship. Students of EEA countries or Switzerland are eligible for the rest of the scholarships.

Scholarship Description:
 The Oxford Graduate Scholarships were established in 2012 through a groundbreaking fundraising initiative, to support graduate students of the highest calibre from across the worlds. Over 40 scholarships are available for 2014/15 and they aim to offer up to 130 new, fully-funded scholarships each year when they meet their total fundraising goal. The University contributes 40% of the funds for these scholarships, together with 60% from generous donations provided by numerous supporters of the University and its colleges.

All eligible applicants who have applied to the University by the relevant January deadline for their course  (10 January 2014 for Medical Sciences, Philosophy, Politics & International Relations and Computer Science; 24 January 2014 for all other subjects), will automatically be considered for the Oxford Graduate Scholarships, with the exception of the Oxford-Pershing Square Graduate Scholarships, which require an additional application to be made.
