28 First Class Degrees in TASUED as 10,899 Graduates

28 out of 10,899 students graduated with First Class Degrees at the 3rd, 4th and 5th combined convocation ceremonies of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) which took place on Monday, 17th to Friday, 28th November, 2014.

A further breakdown shows that 10,770 graduated with first degree while 85 students were awarded Master’s Degree and 44 students were awarded the Postgraduate Diploma.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Oluyemisi Obilade, urged the graduands to serve the state and the country at large.

118 Students Bagged First Class Degrees at UNIBEN

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Godwin Oshodin, has revealed that no fewer than 118 graduands of the university would be awarded with first class degrees at its 39th and 40th convocation coming up during the Founder's Day Ceremonies of the institution.

He further revealed that out of a total of 19,472 graduands from the 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 academic sessions, 16,076 would bag first degrees while 130 would be awarded with doctorate degrees.

The award of certificates, diplomas and first degrees, which would hold on November 20, would be preceded by a convocation lecture to be delivered by the Vice-Chancellor of Lancaster University, Professor Mark Smith.

TASUED 2014/2015 ADMISSION INTO PART-TIME DEGREE PROGRAMMES

Applications are invited from qualified candidates for admission into 4½- year (9 Semesters) and 6- year (12 Semesters) Part-Time and Sandwich Degree Programmes.
 
GENERAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
The admission requirements for Bachelor’s Degree Programmes are as follows:

(A) FOUR AND A HALF–YEAR (9 SEMESTERS) PROGRAMME (SANDWICH PROGRAMME) (VACATION)
Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) with at least Merit in two core/Teaching subjects, GCE ‘A’ Level, OND/HND in relevant areas with at least Lower Credit or Academic Diploma from recognized Universities are required in addition to (B) below. Advanced National Technical/Business Certificate (ANTC, ANBC is acceptable for Vocational Courses only).

(B) SIX -YEAR (PART-TIME) PROGRAMME (12 SEMESTERS) (WEEKEND)
WAEC/NECO Senior Secondary School Certificate (SSSC), General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level (GCE 0’Level), National Technical Certificate/National Business Certificate (NTC/NBC is acceptable for Vocational Courses only) with Credits in five (5) subjects obtained at not more than two sittings.
A credit in 0’level English Language is required for all courses.

SPECIAL COURSES REQUIREMENTS
1. A credit in 0’level Mathematics is required for science, social and management sciences, vocational and technical education based courses except where otherwise stated.
2. Credit in Literature in English is required for English Language.
3. A Credit in at least one Science subject is required for Mathematics.

SCREENING DATES
Screening shall be conducted on Friday, 12TH December, 2014 for all 100 level applicants at ICT Ososa Campus of the University by 9.00 a.m. The screening date for Direct Entry (200 level) applicants shall be Friday, 19th December, 2014 at ICT Ososa Campus of the University by 9.00 a.m.
Candidates’ participation in the screening exercise is a mandatory requirement for entry into the University.

Senates Moves to End HND/Degree Issue

The Senate yesterday passed for second reading, the Bill seeking to end the dichotomy between holders of Higher National Diploma (HND) and Bachelors Degree in the labour market by both public and private employers.

The passage of this Bill for second reading has therefore raised fresh hope for an end to the ongoing discrimination against holders of Higher National Diploma (HND) in the labour market, which they have variously protested against.

While debating the Bill, which was sponsored by Ayo Akinyelure, the senators also called for the merging of polytechnics with universities so that they can be degree awarding institutions as a way of ending the discrimination.

The bill was subsequently referred to the Committee on Education for further legislative work and should be resubmitted to the Senate plenary in four weeks.

Leading debate on the Bill, the sponsor, Akinyelure, stated that the aftermath of continuing injustices, disparity and discrimination meted on products of polytechnics in Nigeria is threatening to derail the nation’s core policy thrust of evolving a technological and scientifically based self sufficient and self – reliant society.

The senator urged the Senate to intervene in the interest of industrial harmony and development.
He noted that there was sufficient evident that thousands of potential polytechnic and technology students were contemplating while some had decided to opt for university education because of the perceived and real discrimination against HND graduates in preference for university degree holders.
According to him, if those involved are allowed to opt out of polytechnic education, there will be a vacuum in the labour market.

Akinyelure said several entreaties were made to the Federal Civil Service to stop the glaring wage disparity and discrimination against HND holders.

The entreaties, he regretted, were to no avail.

“And, as if to make matters worse, certain Federal corporations are known to openly discriminate against HND holders to the extent of limiting their progress within the hierarchy of such government bodies,” he added.

Akinyelure stressed that a government employment policy that places degree holders above HND holders without recourse to skill and ability of the HND holders does more harm than good.
Many senators contributed to the debate for and against the bill. But Senate President David Mark said the issue was difficult to legislate on.

Mark said: “I think it is more of attitude than what we can legislate on. For whatever it is worth, it is an interesting bill.

“I believe that if it goes to public hearing, we will get many people who will be interested to give their views on whether or not the bill should be passed. But judging from the debate here (Senate), our attempt to equate HND to a degree is not likely to work. What will come out of it is to find a way forward, which is where the problem is at the moment.

“But to spend four years, you have a lower entry point; you have to go and do two extra years to get a degree. Then, you suddenly say I don’t need the two extra years. Just equate me, then I move along.
“I think that is going to be a very difficult thing. Nobody, who has done a degree, went back to the polytechnic to do an HND. You can’t fault that logic.”

The bill was referred to the Senate Committee on Education for further legislative work.

2014/2015 UNIPORT Commences Admission To Acib/B.sc Linkage Programme

This is to inform the general public on the commencement of the ACIB/B.Sc LINKAGE PROGRAMME 2014/2015. Applications are hereby invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission into the Part-Time (Weekend) B.Sc. (Hons) Degree in Finance and Banking, Faculty of Management Sciences, University of Port Harcourt for the 2014/2015 Session.
  
Objectives
(a) The Programme leads to the award of B.Sc. (Hons) Degree in Finance and Banking.
(b) The curriculum is designed to update, strengthen and enhance the academic and analytical skills of the students thereby improving their efficiency and productivity on the job.

Admission Requirements:
i. All candidates must have five credit passes including English and    Mathematics at the “O’ Level, as   basic requirement.

Proceed with the print out from the Bank and obtain Application Form from the Office of the Finance Officer in the Faculty of Management Sciences, University Park, University of Port Harcourt, on payment of a non-refundable fee of Eleven Thousand, Five hundred Naira (11,500.00) only which includes bank charges.

UNN Degree Form 2014/2015 is now Available (Change of Department)

This is to bring to your attention to the commencement of the process for change of Degree Programme for 2014/2015 session.

Interested students should strictly adhere to the attached Guidelines for Change of Degree Programme and the Application Procedure.

GUIDELINES FOR CHANGE OF DEGREE PROGRAMME

1. Application for Change of Degree Programme should be received at the end of each session. The processing of the application should be completed not later than one month from the beginning of the new session.

2. Application for change of Degree Programme should be completed within 2 weeks from the beginning of the session.

3. The Admissions Office will confirm the students’ eligibility for the new departments and process the applications of the students listed in the payment schedule.

4. Movement of Application forms from the Admissions Office to the Faculties and back should be done in batches. Students should not be involved in the movement of the forms.

5. At the end of the stipulated period, only those who have completed the process will be registered in their new departments. There will be no carryover of the process to another session.

6. For a student to change from one department to another, he/she must make the minimum GPA of 1. 00. Each department will determine the minimum cut off GPA for accepting students into the department, through Change of Degree Programme

7. No other forms of payment should be made or collected for Change of Degree Programme, except that indicated in the Application procedure.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

1. Visit the University of Nigeria website (www.unn.edu.ng) or portal (www.portal.unn.edu.ng), log in your Registration Number to generate and download a unique Payment Invoice for Application Processing Fee. Take the invoice to any branch of UBA or Zenith bank on the e-transact platform to pay Five thousand naira (N5, 000) processing fee. Ensure that the Invoice Number is keyed in appropriately at the bank and obtain a Confirmation Slip containing a Confirmation Number and your Invoice Number.

2. Visit the University of Nigeria website or portal (www.unn.edu.ng / www.portal.unn.edu.ng) again and login your Registration number, the Confirmation and Invoice numbers, and then complete the Change of Degree Form online.

3. Application for Change of Degree Programme takes effect from Tuesday, September 16th, 2014 while Application Form should be submitted to the Admissions Office not later than Wednesday, October 1st, 2014

4. Candidates should note that any form which is not completed on-line will not be processed and that any extraneous payments will nullify the application.
