ASUP NEC Meeting Uodates: Strike Continues as NEC Awaits Senate Meeting

According to report reaching us, the outcome of the ASUP NEC Meeting in Yabatech, Lagos is not favorable, we are informed that the strike continues as ASUP await Senate meeting.

The Main reason for publishing this post is to inform Polytechnic Students that ASUP will be holding another NEC meeting on the 1st of July, 2014 (And we hope it is not going to be the same story)

If you recalled, the Union started their NEC meeting in Lagos State after Government representatives refused to show up for the meeting they were scheduled to have together. (Seriously, the F.G have no business with ASUP again?)

End ASUP strike - Nigeria Polytechnic Students to FG and ASUP

Read the official report below.
The National Executive Council of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) at the end of its 77th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Lagos has announced that the nine months old strike continues.

The NEC said status quo remains pending the outcome of its meeting with the Senate Committee on Education on Tuesday July 1st, 2014.

ASUP President, Chibuzor Asomugha, disclosed at the end of the meeting that the stakeholders meeting scheduled for June 24 got stalled due to the absence of representatives of the government.

“That meeting was supposed to be held, resolution reached and an agreement was also signed. It was against this backdrop that we fixed the NEC meeting so that, if we have the resolutions, we will come here and suspend the strike.

Uzoamaka, Formenich’s Country Director, lauded the performance of the students at the presentation of the awards in Lagos, describing them as outstanding.

The director said three of the awards were based on the Cumulative Grade Points of the students in the 2012/2013 academic session.

“Each of the awardees will receive N100, 000 while the best award winner will visit the Africa headquarters of the Geneva-based organisation in South Africa.”

Uzoamaka said the award was restricted to the Higher National Diploma(1) students, to encourage the beneficiaries to study and enjoy the scholarship while in the college.

Earlier, the Rector of the College, Dr Margaret Ladipo, said the scholarship was part of the efforts of the institution’s management to ensure that YABATECH graduates continued to excel in technological education in Nigeria.

University of Jos Thrown into Confusion Following a Bomb Scare

The Faculty of Education of the University of Jos was yesterday thrown into turmoil when a suicide bomber was said to have been sighted in the school premises.

An alarm was raised which saw students and lecturers abandoning classrooms and taking to their heels.

It was gathered that some of the students summoned courage and confronted the suspected suicide bomber.
He was beaten up to a point of coma before security agents intervened and took him away.

It was later discovered the accused was a student, who was actually carrying a polythene bag containing Garri and milk into the faculty lecture hall and was asked to reveal the content but initially declined, which led to the beating he received.

The President of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the university, Mr. Abel Nok, confirming this said, there was no bomb planted in the faculty and urged the students to go about their normal academic activities.

According to report there has been rumours of explosives planted around the faculty which was the reason a black polythene bag containing Garri and milk was mistaken for explosives resulting in pandemonium.

However, there has not been any official statement by the school authorities or the police concerning the incident as at the time of filling this report.

Afe Babalola University Agriculture Programme Doing Great

Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti is making a big statement with its ambitious agriculture programme, which may ultimately announce the profile of the institution as a food basket of at least, its own community in Ekiti State.

he ambitious agriculture programme of the university, however, has justified the belief of the school of thought that without crude oil and the largesse that has promoted official graft, Nigeria can conveniently be a developed country by encouraging and promoting large-scale agriculture.

The ABUAD Farm, separated from the main campus of the institution by a fence, is located to the north of the Elemi River and covers an approximately over 100 hectares. An official of the school said two more villages had been annexed to expand the farm. In essence, the farm could be twice the specified size. Currently occupying different sections of the farm are fish ponds, nursery for various plants, an elaborate high-breed mango plantation, moringa, soya bean, tick tree and a feed mill among others.

ne may think that power supply, which seems to be taking on the toga of a monster in recent times, may scuttle the ambitious dream of the university and its revolutionary farm. Spokesman for the school, Layi Ajibola, however, said the institution had concluded an agreement with General Electric of the United States, which had granted the school $700,000 to build an hydro electric power on the Elemi River, which passes through the institution.

With such facilities in place and the passion of the backers of the university to do more, one may not be able to dispute the decision of UNESCO, which in 2013, nominated the institution as one of its centres of excellence.

Post-UTME Updates - Why 1.2 Million Candidates May Not Gain Admission In 2014 - Tips

According to available statistics about 1.2 million candidates may not be able to secure admission into any not the nation’s higher institutions this year.
You wonder why this is so?

The number of candidates seeking admission outweighs the carrying capacity of the nation’s higher institutions put together. The average Nigerian university has a carrying capacity of 4,500

The country presently does not have enough higher institutions to accommodate the total number of candidates seeking admission each year even after such candidates have successfully scaled through the post-UTME screening of these schools.

Again for a candidate to get admission into any of the higher institutions, the candidate has to score 180 and above to be admitted by a university; 150 at least to be admitted by a polytechnic or a college of education.

Going by this, about 351,232 applicants are already disqualified from sitting for screening exams owing to failure to meet the minimum 150 score, invalid results and absenteeism.

With this development it would be advisable for candidates to seek and explore other alternatives than staying at home and wasting precious time.
