Common Error Students Thinks About NOUN - TIPS

It is clear now that there are a few conveniently omitted pieces of important on the National Open University website. Some of these information might be considered minor while others might be considered a bit more important as they WILL affect your decision to attend the National Open University or otherwise. Here are a few common misconceptions about NOUN:

1. Everything Is Online, Quick & Easy

Wrong! initially while you are reading up about NOUN trying to decide if it is a good fit for your schedule because you have a day job and what not, you are led to believe that you can absolutely do everything online quick and easy and face your work full time. It is sad, but it is not. There are endless forms and files you will have to submit. An erroneous list of documents to sign and stamp from one counselors office to another admin officers table. It can get frustrating if you are not prepared to do the heavy lifting.

2. It Is Affordable

This has to be by far the most common misconception, most people think because it is owned by the Federal Government the prices will be dicey. Wrong! A new student’s first semester fees, registrations and exam fees will rake up to about ninety thousand naira. The payments do not have to be made at once of course but they must be made.

3. You Always Get Lecturers And Facilitators

Wrong again! In fact, if for any reason students of a department in a particular study center are below 50, you can be denied access to facilitators. Courses need to be registered a high number of times in your study center for facilitators to be provided.

4. You Do Not Have To Go To Study Centers Regularly

This one is the most dangerous on this list. The way/rate at which information is passed across in most study centers in abysmal. A small white piece of paper will be posted on a notice board with hundred other white pieces of paper saying “If you offered ENT 403 and your result is missing, come to the admin office on or before 2 pm on Friday or forget about your result.” No jokes, if you are lucky and you have a friend who is around daily, you might be honored with a phone call and if not, sorry. Hence, you have to be very present very often in order to not miss important information.

Just treat it like any other higher institution, with the seriousness and mindset of a full time student and you will have no problems at all. This are a few problems most people might encounter. The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has now joined the league of leading global institutions at the forefront of using technology to enhance learning, with its migration to a new e-learning platform – iLEARN. Worthy of note is the fact that iLearn represents the very first time in the history of Nigerian tertiary education that e-learning is being fully integrated by a university with indigenous courses made available online, accessible to anyone, anywhere in the world.

Excitedly, with its recent introduction of iLearn, NOUN has succeeded in stepping on to the threshold of pioneering an innovative educational solution to the problems facing tertiary education in Nigeria. With this move, NOUN is giving its students the opportunity to gain access to multiple education delivery channels, which include virtual facilitation, video lectures, audio lectures, smart books, interactive courseware and various other resources in real time through the iLearn platform.

On the 14^th of April this year, the ICT solution provider powering the iLearn portal presented it to the institution at a 3-day usage and capacity building event held in Lagos. In attendance was the Vice Chancellor of the National Open University, Prof. Vincent Ado Tenebe alongside other staff of the institution. As one of the pieces of the robust capacity building plan, the training program focused on providing practical know-how to academic staff of NOUN on how to use the iLearn platform. It presented firsthand the current challenges students faced while studying and how innovative technologies will solve these challenges, improve learning and further reposition the National Open University of Nigeria to provide world class Open and Distance Learning in Africa. Following this capacity building event, in-school trainings have been conducted across all the faculties, during which all NOUN lecturers/facilitators were introduced to the platform and educated on its usage. Furthermore, in-school clinics have been scheduled towards the beginning of the new semester to ensure that all the facilitators are up to speed with the new portal. NOUN students have also started gaining access to the platform and a support service is in full operation, rendering necessary help to the students.

Truly speaking, NOUN is one of the government’s most laudable attempts at providing Nigerians with access to formal tertiary education in a manner suited to their circumstances. NOUN currently has the largest student population amongst all tertiary institutions in Nigeria. The university under the visionary leadership of the current Vice Chancellor, Prof. Vincent Ado Tenebe, has stayed true to its mandate in spite of several mitigating factors. Among such factors is the low level of lecturer to student interaction due to its underlying Open and Distance Learning framework. These issues that affected the students also affected the institution, as the increasing student population became a strain on the institution’s infrastructure and manpower.

But with iLearn, an avenue for real time facilitator-to-student interaction is now provided, in a manner that leverages economies of scale through technology. The effect of this is seamless interaction between facilitators and students, and between students and fellow students. Furthermore, by allowing access through various avenues including the internet, mobile phones and even via SMS, iLearn now makes learning truly flexible and convenient. Students no longer need to study in isolation. If they encounter any issue while studying or should they be in need of any information, they can post questions or requests for explanation to thousands of fellow students a click away – be it on a laptop, tablet or mobile phone. Students will obtain first grade and quality facilitation from NOUN lecturers on the NOUN iLearn platform.

NOUN is now set to play a bigger role in solving the problem of education deficit in the country as the iLearn platform allows the delivery of quality education to a limitless number of students, thereby introducing unprecedented cost controls. Beyond that, individuals seeking to advance their education (professionals, working class people and yes, mums) can now take advantage of this platform without serious worries over time, space and financial constraints. 102 Year-Old-Man Awarded Scholarship - Details here

It was learnt that at the opening ceremony of National Open University Study Centre in Delta State recently the paramount ruler of the Isoko North Local Government Area, HRM Francis Onovughakpor Ekhama who is 102 years old was awarded a limitless scholarship to study to any level of his choice by the Vice Chancellor of NOUN, Prof. Vincent Tenebe.

According to the Vice Chancellor, this is part of the efforts of NOUN to demystifying university education in Nigeria.

He further stated, “the Odion has to start burning his candle now to earn a degree free of charge. He is not the first to be so challenged. The Awujale of Ijebu Land, Ogun State, Oba Sikiru who is 80 years old is a student of NOUN. He would soon graduate.”

15 Prison Inmates Matriculated by National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN)

15 inmates drawn from the Nigerian Prisons, Kirikiri, Ikoyi; Maximum Security Prisons and the Medium Security Prisons, recently matriculated having been admitted by the National Open University of Nigeria.

The prisoners were admitted to study courses such as Law, Theology as well as Peace Study and Conflict Resolution.

The Vice chancellor represented by the Chief Counsellor of NOUN, Mr. Athanasusis Onyeokoro, while speaking during the 12th matriculation ceremony which was held at the Special Centre for the Nigerian Prison Service, KiriKiri, advised the inmates to make maximum use of their study material sand not to allow their present circumstances to derail them from their pursuit, urging them rather to use the opportunity to gain academic laurels.

This has brought the number of inmates studying various degree programmes at the NOUN to 35.

National Open University (NOUN) Students Benin Study Centre Protest Increment in Fees

Students of the National Open University, NOUN Benin Study Center yesterday protested what they described as outrageous increment of school fees by the management.

A student who spoke said, the students of the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN)Benin Study Centre are tired of this onerous ,harsh, detrimental increment of school fees.

It was learnt that to clear a session now one have to pay a minimum of N112,000. Course registration which is usually done every semester is between N2500 - N3500. In addition to these the school fees and the examination fees have also been increased.

According to the source, the students of NOUN are grieved and want their voices to be heard and this increment in fees to be addressed.

National Open University, Hold 12th Matriculation Ceremony on 12th July, 2014

This is to inform the members of the public and most especially all the students of The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) that the matriculation ceremony of her Freshers/Newly admitted students has been scheduled to hold on Saturday, 12th July, 2014 at all the NOUN study centres across the country.

All new students of NOUN are required to complete their registration exercise to enable them participate in the matriculation.

How To Apply for NOUN 2014/2015 Admission (E-APPLICATION)

Applicants should take note that the entire registration process is electronic and online and operates 24 hours a day. You will be required to fill the National Open University Admission Application form online.

2. Pay as follows for NOUN application forms:
For anyone who wishes to enroll into the Undergraduate Programmes N5,000.00 (Five thousand naira) only
While the Postgraduate (PGD and Masters) Programmes N7,500.00 (seven thousand five hundred naira) only
Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) Programmes is N10,000.00 (ten thousand naira) only.

3. Candidates should obtain a NOUN Teller specially designed for NOUN for the purpose of payment.(Ask for the Teller when you get to the Bank)

4. Collect the Application pin CODE equivalent to the amount paid for your form from the Bank.

5. Go online and visit National Open University of Nigeria official website www.noun.edu.ng and when the webpage loads up, click on the “application form”.

6. Use your Application pin number to access your NOUN online application form.

7. You are to complete the online NOUN admission application form by providing the required information.

8. After completion, the candidate can re-open the form as often as he/she likes, before submitting.

9. When you have completed all the above steps, you may submit your form by clicking the submit button at the bottom of the displayed screen on the website.

10. Then print out your provisional admission letter.

III.         ACCESS PROGRAMME

i.   Candidates  who  do  not  possess  the  requirement  for  entry  into  an

undergraduate  programme  will  be  required  to  register  into  the  Access

Programme which    syllabus has   been designed to be  equivalent  to ordinary

level certificate syllabus  of the respective subjects.
