UBA 2014 Foundation National Essay Competition in Nigeria

UBA Foundation, the CSR arm of the United Bank for Africa, is pleased to announce the commencement of the 2014 edition of the National Essay Competition amongst senior secondary school students in Nigeria. Winners will get educational grants to study in any African University of their choice.

The Essay Competition is a follow upon the Read Africa® initiative of the Foundation, which involves giving out literature books to secondary school students to help rekindle the dwindling reading culture amongst the youths in Africa. The programme also involves mentoring and reading sessions with the students.

Competition Details
Entry Procedures and Rules:

• Applicants must attach photocopies of their original birth certificates or international passport data page
• Applicants must be senior secondary school students in Nigerian Secondary Schools
• Applicants should send in handwritten essay entries of not more than 750 words on the above topic
• Applicants must submit their complete contact information (name of school& address, residential address, phone numbers & email addresses)
• The educational grant is only applicable to applicants who intend to study in an African University
• The decision of the Judges is final

Winner - N1,000,000.00 or its local currency equivalent towards university tuition/fees and a Laptop

The panel of judges is made up of professors from reputable Nigerian universities.

Etisalat Prize for Literature - Details and How to Apply

The Etisalat Prize for Literature is the first ever pan-African prize celebrating first time writers of published fiction books. The Prize aims to serve as a platform for the discovery of new creative talent out of the continent and invariably promote the burgeoning publishing industry in Africa.

By recognizing and celebrating writers and other members of the literary community across Africa, Etisalat plans to bring some much needed awareness and acclaim to the art of Fiction writing while also applauding and rewarding the efforts of those who have ventured into this genre in recent times.

At the core of Etisalat’s vision is promoting passion, nurturing talent and providing a platform for communicating ideas, The ‘Etisalat Prize for Literature’ wholly embodies this vision, bringing together celebrated high profile writers, book critics and academics from across the Continent and beyond in order to give credence and honor to ‘home-grown’ talent while also rewarding new entrants and encouraging further participation in this area.
Prize Structure

The Etisalat Prize for Literature celebrates new writers of African citizenship whose first fiction book (over 30,000 words) was published in the last twenty four (24) months. For the purposes of this definition, first book means first printed production in book form of any type or genre. Authors and their publishers can be based anywhere in the world. An online Flash Fiction Prize will be launched later in the year driven entirely by social media – more information on this will be made available on our website.

The winner of the Etisalat Prize for Literature receives £15,000, a Samsung Galaxy Note and a Montblanc Meisterstuck. In line with our vision of promoting upcoming writers, Etisalat will sponsor a book tour to three African cities. The winning writer will also embark on the Etisalat Fellowship at the University of East Anglia mentored by Professor Giles Foden (author of The Last King of Scotland) which will include significant opportunities to meet other writers, publishers and most importantly work on their second book. Shortlisted writers will win a Samsung Galaxy Note and also go on a book tour to two major African cities.

The Etisalat Prize for Literature is unique in that it also aims to promote the publishing industry at large and will therefore purchase 1000 copies of all shortlisted books which will be donated to various schools, book clubs and libraries across the African continent.

  Requirementsfor Entry

Submissions will only be accepted from publishing houses.

All books entered must have a registered ISBN number or equivalent.

Entries for fiction books will be submitted by publishers who have published a minimum of ten (10) authors.

Each publisher will be allowed to enter a maximum of three (3) books – however books maybe called in by the judges.

Each entry will be required to be accompanied by Seven (7) copies of the book being entered along with acceptance of publicity terms.

The Etisalat Prize for Literature is not open to employees of any organization under Emirates Telecommunications Corporation with branded trade name Etisalat.

Ekiti State University (EKSU) on the verge of becoming one of the Best in Africa - Read Details Here

The Vice-Chancellor of  Ekiti State University, Prof. Patrick Oladipo Aina has stressed that  Ekiti State University was on the path of becoming one of the best universities in Africa.  He made the declaration during the PowerPoint  presentation of the Entrepreneurial Studies’ plan for the University. He said that the University embarked on entrepreneurship training for its students as part of the turning around and transformation of the university to produce graduates  who would be skilled and be self employed.

The Consultant  to the Program, Mrs. Foluso Olaniyan stressed that the programme would be beneficial to all and sundry.  In her words: “This project when commissioned will improve the economy of the state.  It is going to pass to students and prospective students vocational skills that will contribute to the development of the economy of the state”.

2014, African Peacebuilding Network Research Grants in Africa

The African Peace building Network (APN) of the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) invites application for research grants. Up to ten individual grants of a maximum of $15,000 will be awarded for African researchers, policy analysts and practitioners working on conflict and peace building issues at universities and research institutions or regional governmental and nongovernmental organizations in Africa. Grants support six months of field-based research, from May to November 2014. Application must be submitted by February 1st 2014.

Study Subject (s):
Support is available for research and analysis on issues such as the following:
-Root causes of conflict and conflict prevention, mediation, management, resolution, and transformation
-Environmental change and conflict
-Post-conflict elections, democratization, and governance
-The relationship between peace building and state building, including state-society relations and state reconstruction
-Transitional justice, reconciliation, and human rights
-Economic and financial dimensions of conflict, peacekeeping, and peace support operations
-Disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration (DDR)
-Security sector reform (SSR)
-Media, civil society, and peace
-Peace partnerships involving the UN, the AU, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), and civil society

For its part, the APN will work toward inserting the evidence-based knowledge that this group produces into regional and global debates and policies focusing on peace building.

Award: APN research grant awards vary depending on the research activities supported but will not exceed $15,000 for individual research projects. APN research grants can cover equipment, books and articles, research/fieldwork-related travel, conference costs and related travel, project design and development support and editorial and professional/institutional support.

Selection Criteria:
Grants will be awarded on a competitive, peer-reviewed basis.

Notification:
All applicants will be informed about the outcome of the competition by April 2014.
