17% Students Of Turkish Nile University On Scholarship

Prof. Hussein Sert, the Vice-Chancellor of Nigerian Turkish Nile University (NTNU), said that 17 per cent of students in the institution were on scholarship.

Sert told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Saturday the institution offered scholarship to students that performed excellently in pre-university examinations.

According to him, some state governments also sponsor their students in the institution.

“Over 17 per cent of our 700 students are studying under scholarship; we offer scholarship to students who perform excellently well in JAMB and WAEC.

“All top performers at the International Science Olympiad get scholarship and we also send students to Turkey for exchange programme,’’ he said.

He said that 70 per cent of the lecturers in the school were Nigerian, adding that NTNU did not compromise standard of learning and quality of lecturers.

“We look for high quality lecturers; in the first year of this university, we laid off 10 lecturers because they were not meeting our standards.

“The minimum qualification for being a graduate assistant in the school is a master’s degree while lecturers must have Ph.D,’’ Sert said.

The vice chancellor said that the NTNU had students from Turkey, Cameroon, Benin, Togo, Burkina Faso, among others. (NAN)

LASU VC Persuade Students, Staff Not To Disrupt Academic Activities

Professor John Obafunwa, the Vice Chancellor of the Lagos State University has urged the students and staff of the University to desist from activities that could lead to the disruption of the academic calendar.
 
He revealed that the administration has ensured smooth academic activities, mobilisation of successful graduates for NYSC as and when due, and conducted convocation in the three years of his reign. He therefore appealed for this to not be disrupted.

The Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, Prof. John Obafunwa, on Wednesday urged students and staff of the institution to shun activities that could disrupt the school’s academic calendar.

Obafunwa made the plea while presenting the scorecard of his 1095 days in office.

The vice chancellor said that any interruption in the academic calendar would affect the set goals of his administration to reposition the university.

“I appeal to the students not to do anything that will disrupt the institution’s academic calendar, so that the set objectives of the administration can be achieved,” he said.

Obafunwa said his administration was determined to pursue, without distraction, a strong mission to re-package the university’s academic programmes to fulfil the contemporary academic needs and challenges of the 21st century.

“The university, in the last three years, has undergone tremendous transformation in terms of academic and non-academic activities.

“As an institution, we have recorded some ground breaking and monumental feats in the course of translating our challenges into opportunities,” he said.

Obafunwa said that the event on his scorecard of 1095 days in office was not about him as an individual, but “of a collection of members of the university’’.

“All thanks to the state government, governing council, senate, deans of faculties, head of departments, staff, students and critics for their collective contributions toward the recorded development.

“I say thanks to the critics because their criticism prompted more things to be done,” he said.

Obafunwa said that the institution was waxing stronger in spite of the challenges it faced from various unions.

“I am not trying to give an impression that everything is smooth, as there are issues here and there, but we can always get them sorted out.

“Whatever we do, let us think of life after LASU and be mindful of the image we portray the university with outside the gate,” he said.

Obafunwa listed his achievements to include the completion of projects like School of Transport, LASU Radio Station, LASU International School, LASU new auditorium and Central language library.

Others, according to him, are the Taslim Elias Library and the 3-in-1 Auditorium (Faculty of Education).

Obafunwa also said that his administration introduced the electronic voting system for the students union, which cost the institution about a million naira.

“The administration ensured mobilisation of successful graduates for NYSC as and when due, and conducted convocation in the three years of reign
.
“Sixty-one out of the 62 programmes being run in the university have been duly accredited by the National University Commission.

“An appreciable number of students have benefited from various scholarship and bursary award from private and public organisation and government parastatals,” he said. (NAN)

Meet Prof. OSASERE ORUMWENSE UNIBEN New Vice Chancellor

Prof. OSASERE ORUMWENSE has been appointed the new Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin.

He will succeed the incumbent Vice Chancellor, Prof. Osayuki Godwin Oshodin, whose tenure expires in November, 2014.

Orumwense, a Professor of Material Engineering, was until his appointment, Dean, Faculty of Engineering of UNIBEN.

‎The new Vice Chancellor had previously served as Rector of Edo state-owned Institute of Management Technology (IMT), Usen.

Ibrahim Umar Appoints as New Vc of Gombe State University

Ibrahim Umar has been appointed the new Vice Chancellor of Gombe State University, GSU by the governor of Gombe State, Ibrahim Dankwambo.
This was made known in a statement issued by the Public Relations Officer of the university, Abubakar Sammani, in Gombe on Friday.

The statement quoted Mr. Sammani as saying the appointment letter was signed by the Secretary to Gombe State Government, Abubakar Bage.

Until his appointment, Mr. Umar was the Dean, Faculty of Science and Postgraduate School of the university.
Born on June 12, 1958 in Dukul village of Kwami Local Government Area of the state, Umar obtained a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria in 1981.

He started work as a Graduate Assistant at the ABU in 1982, had a Ph. D from University of Salford, England, on Nuclear and Radiochemistry in 1987.

He was the Director, Centre for Energy Research and Training, ABU Zaria; Director, Nuclear Science and Technology, Energy Commission of Nigeria, Abuja and one time Deputy Vice Chancellor of the state university.

A recipient of the National Honours of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), Mr. Umar is a Fellow of the Chemical Society of Nigeria, Fellow of Materials Society of Nigeria.

Mr. Umar succeeds Abdullahi Mahdi, who has been the Vice Chancellor of the university since its inception in 2005.

The Governing Council of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (UDUSOK) has appointed Professor Abdullahi Abdu Zuru as the Vice-Chancellor of the university.

Until his appointment, Prof. Abdullahi Abdu Zuru was the Vice-Chancellor of Kebbi State University of Science and Technology (KSUST), Aliero. UNIABUJA ASUU Strike is Unjustifiable - VC

Responding on Tuesday to the indefinite strike action embarked on by the University of Abuja lecturers over what they termed misappropriation of fund by the Vice Chancellor of the institution, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja, James Adelabu, has said that the striking lecturers of the institution had no justification for their strike.‎

In his remarks, the VC said that the union was ignorant of the development regarding the check-off dues.

He said that there was a directive from the Federal Ministry of Education stopping all university authorities from collecting and remitting check-off dues to the union.

“Salary is paid in full. How can they say I have deducted something and have diverted it somewhere?

“All what the union is trying to do is just to paralyse the system,’’ he said.

According to the VC the ASUU union in the University of Abuja is divided into two groups namely ASUU Integrity and ASUU Splinter. It was learnt that the ASUU splinter is the group on strike.

Concerning some students who currently are writing their examinations and preparing for their industrial training, the VC said he will supervise the examination alongside the Integrity Group faction of ASUU UNIABUJA chapter.

UNIZIK Appoints New Vice Chancellor

Prof. Greg Nwakobi has emerged the new Vice Chancellor of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka. The final screening that made him to emerge as the vice chancellor was conducted this week.

Prof Greg Nwakobi was the Deputy Vice chancellor Administration before being elected the Vice-chancellor. According to the outgoing vice chancellor, over thirty persons indicated interest in the position.

University of Maiduguri Appoints New Vice Chancellor

Professor Ibrahim Abubakar Njodi has been appointed the new Vice Chancellor of the University Of Maiduguri by the institution’s The Governing Council.

Professor Njodi joined the University of Maiduguri in 1987 as a Graduate Assistant in the department of Physical and Health Education, Faculty of Education and rose through the ranks to become Professor in 2006.

Professor Njodi obtained his B.Sc. in Physical and Health Education from the University of Maiduguri, in 1985 and his MSc in Health Education in Unimaid and his PhD in the same field in 2003 from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.

Professor Njodi appointment will take with effect from June 3, 2014.

University of Benin Vice Chancellor Suffers From Food Poisoning, Flown to London

Prof. Godwin Oshodin, the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin, has been flown to a London hospital as a result of a presumed food poisoning he suffered months ago after efforts by medical experts in Nigerian hospitals has proved abortive in ejecting the poison from his system.

Professor Oshodin had earlier as report has expressed fear over what he described as a plan to assassinate him by some staff members that were dismissed this year for unprofessional conduct by the Governing Council.

A group recognized as Benin National Congress BNC, has said they are going to give everything within their disposal to ensure that justice is meted on the people responsible for the alleged assassination attempt on the professor and called on the security agencies to do their best in apprehending those involved or the group will have no other choice than to resort to self-help options in ensuring justice.

According to a statement the group said, “Let it be known that as soon as we confirm the masterminds of these attempted homicide; we may resort to jungle means to avenge this anti-Benin affront on the psyche and land of our great ancestors.

“For 40 years, we were deprived the chance of producing a Vice-Chancellor in the University of Benin. Now, we got one by divine grace, they want to kill him by cruel means. The man has been flown abroad for poison-related issues.

“We are closely monitoring the process of the appointment of Prof. Oshodin’s successor, we need not say that the University is preferably relocated to another state of Nigeria, than for us to give a free hand to discreet poison-killers and blood suckers to overwhelm patriotic administrator like Prof. Oshodin, whose tenure is synonymous with landmarks achievements.”

UNILAG Matriculates only 6,488 Students out of 32,764

The Vice-Chancellor, University of Lagos, Prof. Rahamon Bello, has challenged matriculating students to distinguish themselves in their academics so as to enjoy the institution’s motivational package for scholars.

Bello spoke at the 2013/2014 Matriculation ceremony for fresh students of the university in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that 6,488 new students were administered the matriculation oath by the vice-chancellor.

He noted that 32,764 candidates applied for admission into the 50 year-old institution, urging the lucky ones to see their admission as not only noble, but glorious.

“You therefore must have the goal to acquire academic excellence for which this university is reputed.

“I wish to encourage you all to work hard and distinguish yourselves in your academics as our university has a motivational package for distinguished students on Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.50 and above.

“Included in the package are a scholarship of N50,000, provision of accommodation in choice hall, 50 per cent discount on bed space and nomination to participate in seminars and conferences nationally and internationally.

“You shall also be entitled to participate in recruitment tests in the final year, nomination for scholarship from external bodies on the request from organisations as well as selection as guest speaker at orientation programmes to motivate fresh students,” he said.

According to Bello, the package is not only attractive, but equally inspiring.

He admonished the students that the journey required determination diligence, focus and resilience.

The vice-chancellor, who gave a breakdown of the number of admitted students, said that 728 were in the Faculty of Arts and 940 in the Faculty of Business Administration.

He said that 1,036, 592 and 398 were admitted into the Faculties of Education, Engineering and Environmental Sciences respectively.

Bello also said that 289 students were admitted into the Faculty of Law, while 1020, 747 and 177 went into the Faculties of Science, Social Sciences and Pharmacy respectively,.

According him, the College of Medicine has 561 new intakes. (NAN)

University of Ilorin Admits Only 8,587 out of 103,211 Candidates for 2013/2014 Session

The University of Ilorin, (Unilorin) Kwara State admits only 8,587 students out of the 103,211 candidates who applied for admission into the University for the 2013/2014 academic year.

Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali said out of the applicants, 16,123 passed the Post Utme, while 8,587 were admitted and matriculated in line with the Institution’s carrying capacity.

The University at the weekend matriculated 8,587 students who were successfully admitted into the Institution for the 2013/14 session.

Professor Abdulganiyu Ambali urged the students to be disciplined and religiously comply with the Institution’s rules and regulations. He noted that the University has zero tolerance for indiscipline.
