Nyesom Wike: Minister of Education, Resigns from Office

The minister of education Nyesom Wike has resigned his position alongside six other ministers.

It was learnt that this was a necessary for them to pursue their political ambitions in view of the 2015 general election.


The ministers, whose departure had long been expected, will contest gubernatorial elections in their respective states.

ASUP STRIKE UPDATES: ASUP/COEASU Strike Continues as Ministers Shun Meeting with National Assembly

Due to the absence of the supervising minister of education Mr Nyesom Wike and minister of trade Emeka Wogu and other key officials to the scheduled meeting of the striking Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, ASUP, and the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union, COEASU,with the Joint Committee of the National Assembly yesterday, hopes that the striking lectures will go back to the class room was dashed.

The meeting was postponed to the end of the month due to the absence of the minister and other officials.

ASUP has now been on strike for 337 days, while students of colleges of education have remained at home since last December.

Minister of Education Nyesom Wike Resign to Pursue Governorship

Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, has reportedly tendered his letter of resignation to President Goodluck Jonathan. It is believed that he has resigned to pursue his ambitions for governorship of Rivers State once the incumbent, Hon. Rotimi Amaechi’s tenure expires.

The minister is said to have briefed the president of his intention to contest in the 2015 Rivers state governorship election. He has reportedly gotten President Jonathan’s approval to contest.

The resignation is expected to take effect from April 1, 2014. His resignation will be announced next week, on Wednesday during the Federal Executive (FEC) meeting.
